Default The Hobbit (2011)

Since I created an entire forum for the Hobbit movies, perhaps this is obvious, but I'm very much looking forward to seeing them. I'd love to hear anything MovieDiscussions members have to say about them.

Some basic information for people who haven't been following the latest news as closely as I am:
  • The story from "The Hobbit" (the book) will be split into two films; the first is out December 2011 and the second December 2012.
  • Peter Jackson will be producing; Guillermo del Toro is directing
  • They've recently had the basic story outline approved by the studio, so right now they're starting to write the actual script and do some location scouting
  • People at Weta are reportedly busy doing creature design stuff
  • I've heard it said that they'll be replanting the Hobbiton set this summer
  • Filming starts March next year
  • No casting information yet; Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis will almost certainly return as Gandalf and Gollum, but nothing has been signed.

Peter Jackson directing? Yay, I liked King Kong so hopefully this'll be good.

Not quite. I actually said:

Still, I think Peter will influiance the project a fair amount through producing and co-writing it, and I like where Guillermo del Toro seems to be going with it from the interviews with him that I've read.

(Also: I assumed this would be obvious, but just in case it isn't, The Hobbit is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings)

Didn't Peter Jackson do the original LOTRs?

Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson are like the exact same director, if you ask me. Their movies are really similar, the two of them are easily the most comparable directors in Hollywood. I'm pretty happy about del Toro directing, I loved Pan's Labryinth and both of the Hellboys.

I am super psyched about this. I'm a huge Tolkien fan and the wait for announcements is akin to torture.

I'm not sure how this ended up in the Science Fiction section - was the thread moved? Because it probably belongs in fantasy.
